Dear Cute Overload, I'm so sorry for the Slashdot link! It's the one and only time I've been able to directly influence my husband on posting anything I suggest. So for all you nerds out there, yes.. it's true! My submissions are usually denied as well. Even as wife I get no special Slashdot privileges. Except, I did get the privilege of making the new lovely pink header:
I also suggested much of the OMG OMG and "well, gotta go now!" wording, so for all you cynics out there, it was suggested by a woman... a woman who thinks it is hi-LAR-i-ous.
UPDATE: I've gotten word from both Meg and Theo on cuteoverload not to worry about the Slashdotting. Their servers held up, and now there are many more fans of teh cute who have found a home.
I went through about a dozen ideas for this one.
Hemos wanted it. He loves biotech. Nanotech is still on the back burner. Sooooo difficult!
Obviously, Lord of the Rings requires it's own icon.
They wanted one for the Matrix as well, but that was before the sequels actually came out and , well.... sucked. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan. A huge, disappointed, disillusioned fan. Trivia: These are the actual pills from screenshots of Morpheus' hands in the first movie where he offers Neo the choice.
Hopefully all the different things are recognizable. Records are harder to make from scratch than I ever expected.
This dude was the best thing I could come up with at the time. It had to be "general" sci fi instead of a specific series or franchise (no Darth Vader helmets... that would be the "Star Wars" topic and might alienate the "Lost in Space Fans".) Trivia: This is an alien from the original Star Trek series. Yeah, yeah... I've alienated the Star Wars fans now. Too bad.
I sent this as a prototype to Rob and he *used* it. Bleah!
Used somewhere deep in the bowels of Slashdot, probably for editorial purposes.
Remake of the classic SPAM can, performed under duress.
Apparently, Hormel Foods was threatening a lawsuit.
VA's lawyer even commented on it. I think he said something sarcastic about how "appetizing" it was.
The orginial icon that many, many people hated, and the "good one" that went up after
a few days of complaints. Guess I should never try to draw anime again on the spur of the moment.
CowboyNeal recently told me that someone insisted that the Anime icon for Slashdot was a gift from Slashdot.jp. Really.... hmmmm. Nope.
I think I had a stroke of genious on this one. Or maybe just a stroke. Rob had casually mentioned
that Slashdot needed a "Patents" icon -no rush. Then one day at work, I was listening to Geeks In
Space... one with Chris DiBona... and they were blathering on about patents and how stupid some of them are...
and BAM!!! I thought of this.
This one was just fun. I've gotten quite a few compliments on it too.
Quite a relief, considering how sacred Tux is to a lot of people. At first, I was leery
about altering such a beloved icon.
This is another "remake" of an icon Rob had done.
I'm fairly proud of this one. Getting the shadow just right took a bit of effort,
and it's one of my favorites.
It looks so cool.
One reader was upset that the header on the newspaper said "times"
because he hatet the New York Times. Actually, if you look closely, it DOESN'T say TIMES.
It says "IMES." Nyah-nyah.
Rob described what he wanted and I made this icon. Apparently Timothy
was very excited to finally have an icon for his Slashback topic.
Rob wasn't sure about this one at first. His comment went something like...
"it's wierd, but we'll use it until we get something better." But it's been up
there for quite a while. Besides, this was a tough one... he had already rejected
multiple former attempts.
In retrospect, the arrow is a bit much. But I have a thing for arrows, so it was probably inevitable. Trivia: it's probably too small to tell, but the laptop is actually a Sony Viao.
Unfortuneately, this will probably never be used again. But it was cool.
No one seemed to really like this one, but they needed *something* and
I had already made this for the (now extinct) "Forums" section of Grouptour.com.
It also was the icon for user journals on Slashdot, until I came up with the new one. UPDATE: Rob decided to use this icon as the topic for his marriage proposal (In his
words... "I wanted to use one that you made!") so I guess I'm stuck with it now.
It's so pretty! Oooh! Aaaah!
The puzzle was Rob's idea. I hate it.
These are the first icons I did for Slashdot (I think). Media was easy,
but I remember struggling with Graphics for a while and doing several different versions before
it was "Rob Approved".
Hardware - a remake of the wierd-looking original
Announcements - sad, but it was the best I could do
Internet - I just tweaked it so it didn't look so flat
Privacy - another one that required many, many versions
Toys- made completely from scratch in Photoshop
Space - From standard clip art. I've never been able to figure out why the planets look so flat. UPDATE: I'm working on it.
